Why We Use Organic Essential Oils vs. Natural Flavors in Our CBD

At Kyoto Botanicals, we’re often asked why our Orange and Peppermint tinctures have such a light, crisp finish compared to the "candy-like" flavors common in the CBD industry.

The answer goes back to my roots as a scientist and a decision I made in 2019: to build a wellness brand that stays as close to the living plant as possible. To do that, I had to reject the industry standard Natural Flavors and return to pure, organic botanical oils.

The Natural Flavor Loophole: Lessons from the Food Industry

Before I founded Kyoto Botanicals, I spent years at Nestlé working on brands like Hot Pockets. I spent a lot of time in flavor houses, working alongside food scientists to develop natural flavors. We would spend hours mixing different chemicals together in different amounts to try and mimic real flavors to trick your brain: toasted, garlic, butter, etc.

While the scientist in me was always fascinated with how this works at a molecular level, it revealed a truth that most consumers don't realize: Natural doesn't always mean what you think it does.

The FDA Definition

Under FDA regulation 21 CFR 101.22(a)(3), a "natural flavor" can be derived from almost any biological source, think roots, barks, yeast, or even animal products, as long as its primary function is flavoring.

In a lab, you can combine dozens of different extracts and isolates to mimic a specific taste. You can build a strawberry flavor that has never seen a real strawberry. While this is effective for mass-market frozen food, I didn't want that chemistry our wellness products.

"In one of my favorite movies, Willy Wonka famously says, 'The snozzberries taste like snozzberries!' In the world of industrial food science, that’s actually a trick of the trade. You can build a flavor profile in a lab that mimics anything, but it’s still a mimic. When I started Kyoto, I wanted our Orange and Mint to taste like the actual plants they came from. No shortcuts, no black box chemistry, just botanical integrity."

Why I Pioneered the Essential Oil Standard in 2019

When I was developing our first tinctures, the easy path was to buy a Natural Mint flavor from a catalog. Instead, I decided to use Certified Organic Essential Oils. It was a Founder's Choice that fit our brand mission: wellness as close to the plant as possible. Here is why it makes a physical difference in your bottle:

1. Botanical Integrity vs. Chemical Mimicry

An organic essential oil is a single-ingredient plant extract.

  • Peppermint Oil: distilled directly from the leaf.
  • Orange oil: pressed from the organic rind.

We aren't building a flavor profile with a dozen different additives; we are simply sharing the plant's own aromatic delights.

2. A Light Touch for a Daily Ritual

Because I spent years developing bold flavors for the mass market to be able to say "Bold" and "Zesty" on the front of a package, I knew that for a daily wellness ritual, less is more. We use a very light touch of botanical oil so that it complements our broad-spectrum hemp rather than masking it. You get a crisp, clean finish without the syrupy aftertaste of processed flavors.

Why Organic Essential Oils are the Botanical Gold Standard

When I developed our tinctures in 2019, I wanted the flavor to be a functional extension of the hemp plant, not a mask for it. We chose Certified Organic Essential Oils because they represent the simplest expression of the botanical.

1. Steam Distillation vs. Alcohol Extraction

Most Natural Flavors use alcohol or synthetic solvents as carriers. In contrast, our essential oils are typically obtained through Steam Distillation or Cold Pressing.

  • Steam Distillation: Hot vapor gently releases the volatile aromatic compounds from the plant, purifying the oil without harsh chemicals.
  • Cold Pressing: Mechanically squeezing the plant to capture the raw, zesty essence of it.

2. A Light Touch, Not a Flavor Coating

Because we use pure oils, the flavor profile is intentionally light. We aren't trying to make our CBD taste like a packaged sweet. We want a hint of citrus or mint that complements the natural, earthy notes of our broad-spectrum hemp extract.

USDA Organic: Exceeding the Baseline

Under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), companies are technically allowed to use Natural Flavors in organic products [7 CFR 205.605(a)(12)], provided they meet certain non-synthetic criteria.

However, at Kyoto Botanicals, we take it a step further. We don't use the flavoring loophole. Our Orange and Peppermint oils are Certified Organic Essential Oils. This ensures that every single ingredient in your bottle, not just the CBD and carrier oil, meets the highest standard of soil health and purity.

Which Botanical Profile Fits Your Ritual?

We’ve paired these specific organic oils with specific carrier oils to maximize their benefit:

FAQ: Ingredients and Purity

Does the orange flavor contain citric acid?

No. Because we use organic essential oil (from the rind) rather than a fruit extract or juice, it provides the aromatic bright notes without the acidity.

Are your essential oils tested for purity?

Yes. Every batch of our tinctures undergoes third-party testing, and our USDA Organic certification ensures the essential oils were grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.

Why is the flavor so much lighter than other brands?

Many brands use natural-identical flavors or sweeteners to mask the taste of hemp. Because our broad-spectrum extract is clean and solvent-free, we only need a light touch of botanical oil to create a premium experience.
