It all comes down to the glutamate rebound. You feel more relaxed when you drink because it causes your brain to shut off glutamate (the chemical that makes us feel anxious). But when the alcohol wears off, typically around 3 AM, your brain tries to restore chemical balance. It reduces Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which makes you feel calm, and increases glutamate, which makes you feel anxious. The perfect storm for hangxiety.
I quit alcohol in 2023. It wasn’t just a choice to be healthier; it had become necessary. As a biologist and wellness advocate, I have always been a proponent of listening to what your body is telling you, and I had to stop ignoring the signals my own body was sending me.
I lived a specific cycle for years. It went like this: a few to unwind and relax and fall asleep faster, a quick descent into sleep, and then the inevitable. 3:00 AM.
The chain reaction always starts because alcohol is a diuretic. Gotta pee. (I am 46 now and it sucks, but I actively have to maange my fluid intake at night, such is life). Then back in bed that gnawing pit in my stomach takes over. It always feels the same and always feels awful and no breathing exercise or CBD regimen could possibly solve the chemical fluctuations that were going on in my brain.
Even if I somehow get back to sleep, the next day was always a hangxiety mess. Irritable, anxious, and waiting for the evening so I could fix it all with what started it all in the first place. Obvious, predictable, and inexorable. Or so I thought.
1. The Serotonin Floor & The GABA Trap
We often think of alcohol as a relaxant. In the short term, it is. It artificially spikes your GABA (the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter). But the brain is a master of homeostasis. When you artificially push the "chill" button too hard, the brain compensates by cranking up Glutamate, the excitatory spark.
When that alcohol clears your system at 3 AM, you’re left with a Glutamate surge. Your brain is literally red-lining while you’re trying to rest. Simultaneously, alcohol raises your serotonin floor, and as I did more research while contemplating my habit, this was the craziest thing I learned. It borrows happiness from tomorrow to pay for tonight. Eventually as drinking becomes a regular habit, your baseline rises so that it becomes harder to find joy in the everyday things that used to make you happy without a glass in your hand.
It crept up slowly on me and took me years to realize, but the important thing is I became aware of this effect. Once I read the research, it became impossible to ignore that even during activities I enjoyed, I found them more enjoyable with a drink in my hand, so I started forming a habit of just always having a drink in my hand when I was doing something I enjoyed. I finally understood the underlying chemical reason for that and it changed everything.
I found that by removing the ethanol, I wasn't just losing a habit; I was restoring my serotonin baseline. I started finding joy in normal activities again because my brain wasn't constantly trying to recover from a chemical heist.
2. The Metabolic Queue (Lessons from Atkins)
During my time working at Atkins, I learned a fundamental truth about human metabolism: Ethanol has priority. When you drink, your body works to metabolize the ethanol first before anything else. According to the National Institutes of Health, the liver metabolizes ethanol into acetaldehyde, a highly reactive and toxic compound, before it touches anything else.
- The Bottleneck: While your liver is fighting acetaldehyde, your fat metabolism and blood sugar regulation are paused to get the alcohol out of your system.
- The Sugar Spike: All the sugars in your drink (and the carbs in your meal) have to wait in line. This creates a massive insulin spike followed by a crash, which contributes to that 3 AM wake-up call.
2.5 Years Sober: The Progress Report
By swapping ethanol for a ritual that actually serves the nervous system, I have been absolutely thrilled with the results:
- ✅ Zero Hangxiety: The 3 AM stomach knot is a thing of the past and the middle of the night pee is under control too.
- ✅ Restored Focus: Serotonin levels have re-regulated, meaning productivity and energy is in a natural state.
- ✅ Deep Sleep: No more cortisol spikes mid-sleep.
- ✅ Keto-Friendly Clarity: Maintaining a stable glucose line without the ethanol metabolism blockade.
3. Why (re)GROUND is the New Nightcap
With the first and most important wellness step complete, cutting out the alcohol habit, it was time to move onto new rituals that would actually improve my body and mind. I wanted a ritual that helped me be better every day. When I formulated (re)GROUND, I didn't want a shelf full of bottles. I wanted one balanced tool. We put 350mg of four specific, high-intent mushrooms in every serving and 600mg of cacao, all sugar-free, for a reason:
Lion’s Mane for the cognitive benefits. Cordyceps for quiet energy without the jitters. Reishi and Chaga for the systemic balance that alcohol impairs. But as a biologist and a founder that formulates products for me and my family first, I knew the how mattered as much as the what.
Most mushroom coffees are full of Mycelium on Grain (MOG). It’s essentially starch and filler, exactly what you don't want if you're trying to keep your body in balance. We use 100% Fruiting Body extracts, double-extracted for bioavailability. Even our Chaga is wild-harvested. No grain, no fillers, no sugar, no 3 AM issues. Just pure botanical wellness just like we create with all of our products.
