Functional Mushrooms & Adaptogens: The Definitive Guide to Grounded Energy

If you’re new to functional mushrooms, here is the simplest way to look at them: They are nature’s way of helping your body find its center.

While some mushrooms belong on a pizza and others are best left in the woods, functional mushrooms like Lion's Mane and Reishi are botanical powerhouses used for centuries to support focus, energy, and balance. This guide breaks down how they work, why we pair them with cacao, and how to spot the difference between marketing hype and real potency.

1. What are Functional Mushrooms? (The Simple Definition)

Functional mushrooms are a specific category of fungi known for their health-supporting properties beyond basic nutrition. Unlike the mushrooms you find in the produce aisle, these aren't typically eaten for dinner; they are dried, extracted, and used as adaptogens.

  • They are non-intoxicating: They will not make you trip or feel high. They are 100% legal and safe for daily use.
  • They are bio-active: They contain compounds like beta-glucans that help support vitality and cognitive function.
Founder’s Note

While these fungi are bio-active, they are 100% non-intoxicating. We dive deeper into the science of why functional mushrooms won't get you high here.

2. The Story Behind (re)GROUND: From Hater to Believer

I’ll be honest: I used to hate mushrooms. The texture, the taste—it wasn't for me. But as the founder of Kyoto Botanicals, my mission has always been to follow the plant science where it leads.

I was at a local Denver farmers market, the same one where we had our first Kyoto Botanicals booth, and I met a local mushroom grower. He was as passionate about fungi as we are about hemp. He didn't just grow them; he understood the deep botanical relationship between these mushrooms and human wellness. He gave me a mushroom brew that changed everything. It wasn't mushroomy: it was rich, earthy, and made me feel remarkably steady.

That relationship is how (re)GROUND was born. We collaborated with this local expert to finally expand our botanicals beyond hemp for Kyoto Botanicals, creating a bridge between our conservative, safety-first hemp philosophy and the incredible world of functional fungi. And I now incorporate this product into my daily evening routine as a sober founder.

3. How Do Adaptogens Work in the Body?

An adaptogen is a natural substance that helps the body adapt to stress. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), adaptogens work by interacting with the HPA axis—the system that manages your body's response to physical and mental strain.

Think of it like a thermostat: if your energy is too high (stress/jitters), adaptogens help bring you down. If your energy is too low (fatigue/brain fog), they help bring you up. They don't force a "change" in your headspace; they support your body's natural ability to stay grounded.

4. The Big Four: Lion's Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, and Reishi

We chose these four specific mushrooms because they cover the full spectrum of a modern, busy life, which is why we use all four in our daily adaptogenic brew.

  • Lion’s Mane: The "Smart Mushroom." Used to help support mental clarity and focus. It contains compounds called hericenones that promote nerve health. Learn more in our Deep Dive on Lion's Mane for Focus.
  • Cordyceps: The energy booster. Unlike caffeine, Cordyceps supports natural energy at the cellular level (ATP production), making it a favorite for athletes. We have a more in depth look at how Cordyceps helps support stamina if you are curious.
  • Chaga: A massive source of antioxidants. It grows on birch trees and is traditionally used to help support resilience. You can learn all about Chaga in Chaga: The "King of Mushrooms" for Antioxidants & Resilience.
  • Reishi: Known as the "Mushroom of Immortality." It is the ultimate grounding mushroom, perfect for winding down after a stressful day. Read more in our Deep Dive on Reishi for Calm.

5. Why Cacao? (The Advantage Over Mushroom Coffee)

While mushroom coffee is popular, we took a different path. Coffee is a stimulant that can often mask the subtle benefits of adaptogens with caffeine jitters and acidity.

We use Raw Cacao for three reasons:

  1. Rich Nutrition: Cacao is packed with magnesium and flavonoids that support heart health and mood.
  2. Steady Energy: Cacao contains theobromine, which provides a smoother, longer-lasting lift than the "spike and crash" of coffee caffeine.
  3. Flavor & Froth: High-quality cacao has a natural fat content that, when whisked, creates a deliciously frothy ritual without the need for dairy or sugar.

6. Extraction & Lab Testing: Why Quality Is Non-Negotiable

You can't just grind up a dried mushroom and expect results. The "good stuff" is locked behind a tough wall of fiber called chitin.

To make our brew effective, we use concentrated extracts. This ensures the beneficial compounds are bioavailable (your body can actually use them). Just like our other line, ingredients are third-party lab tested. We verify purity, potency, and ensure no heavy metals or contaminants are present.

Note: We are wellness conservatives. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication, please consult your physician before adding adaptogens to your routine.

7. Functional Mushrooms: FAQ

Will functional mushrooms make me high?

No. Functional mushrooms like those in (re)GROUND are completely non-psychoactive. They do not contain psilocybin and will not alter your perception or headspace.

How long does it take for adaptogens to work?

While some people feel a lift in focus or calm immediately, adaptogens are most effective when used consistently over time. Most research, like studies found on PubMed, suggests a "loading period" of 2–3 weeks of daily use to feel the full balancing effects.

Can I take these with your other products?

Yes. Many of our customers use those and functional mushrooms together. They are both botanicals that work via different pathways in the body to support a similar goal: balance.

For example, you might pair (re)GROUND in the morning for focus, and our CBD Gummies or CBD Oils in the evening for relaxation and our CBD Creams for recovery. They are both botanicals that work in harmony to support total body balance.

Is (re)GROUND sugar-free?

Yes. We don't use sweeteners, stevia, or monk fruit. We believe in the rich, earthy flavors of nature. If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can add your own honey or maple syrup to taste.
